Sweetheart Quilt

Hello everyone! Thanks so much for coming by today.  Can you believe it's February!
I know I know....this is not the hexi blanket you've all been waiting to see ( the weather will not play nice and since it's so dark in my house.... I can't photograph it,  soooo,  I will show you my

**Sweetheart Quilt**

I made this last Spring. I already had this photos taken which I found in my never ending archive of photos  { which needs some serious organizing } It reminded me of a window pane while working on it but now that it's all wash and dried several times..it's my favorite one to cover up with.

Doesn't it remind you of a bowl full of pastel sweetheart candies!!!

I cut out six inch squares of all assortments of pastels colors, placed in no special order and stitched them altogether. My favorite ones are the little red heart and buttons, perfect for this time of the month don't you think!
( no planning of that I promise....it just happen)
Then I added a larger border to go along each side. The back side is just like the border.
It's really part of an old sheet that had a really bad spot on it.
(recycled from goodwill)

Not to change subjects but most of the fabric used in this quilt and many others I have made are from old sheets I've found at our local goodwill store.
Fabric is so high these days and since I am a big thrifty girl, I will take what I can get on a dime which then turns into something worth a little something.
Plus... when you cut up all those old worn out sheets, you get a ton of squares..I mean a ton!!

The quilting part was the most enjoyable. I love curling up in a big chair and just starting stitching.
I stitched right up the middle of each square until I reached one side. Turn and went back down the next row. Very easy. Bind it off . Washed and dried.
Now it's my favorite quilt

Very Pleased with this one!!

As promised, I will be back on the hexi blanket.
I see the sun peaking out this morning so let me run

Be back soon...

  6. Your quilt is beautiful Shari, and I too really like the button fabric. I do have one worry, I think that Annabelle bunny is hoping to get her paws on it and make off with it!! xx

  7. What a beautiful quilt - and so nice to see and read the details, because just this week I've started cutting out six-inch squares of fabric for a patchwork quilt! I aspire to something as lovely...did you machine stitch or hand stitch the quilting bit? I love how it intersects each square. A true treasure! Chrissie x

    1. This one is hand quilted. I only used my machine to sew my squares together and the large border but the rest was all hand stitched. I find that the finished look comes out looking more like a quilt than a one that is all machine stitched. Plus...I love it when I can sit for a long time under it while working. Good luck on your quilt....can't wait to see it!

  8. Good evening Shari, it is dark and gloomy in my part of the world too (UK) and I can never remember there being as much rain as there has been here for the last 2 months. I am going to take your tip on board, we have charity shops here (is that what you mean by thrift stores?) and I think I will be having a rummage every now and then to see if I can find pretty buttons, fabric, yarn to upcycle. As well as maybe finding a 'gem' during my rummage I would also be helping a good cause. I often donate to charity shops but I don't usually bother to look around, so this will be new to me. I wonder what I may find?
Your quilt is divine, so cheerful and comfy looking, I love it.

    1. Hi Linda...yes our thrift store is called The Goodwill Store. It's a place where people can drop off and donate for others to come and buy for nearly half of the price you would buy them in the retail stores. Now you do have to rummage through the stuff for some of it not worth anything but I look for things I can recycle into something else...like the sheets. you would be surprised what you can find if you just look. Every now and then I walk out with a few good things....like books and sewing patterns, some dishes or vases...stuff like that. I never buy the clothes or shoes though...I'm very picky with things like that.

      Good luck on your findings.
      xx Shari

  12. That is a gorgeous quilt, Shari. I just started a nine patch quilt as you go pattern. It will take me forever because I'm just doing one at a time, each square with the batting and a backing square. I've never done one like it before so I'm curious how it will turn out.
    Blessings,

  13. What a lovely quilt! I totally sympathise with the lack of daylight- its awful here too- so dark and rainy the last few weeks. Yesterday there was a little extra daylight on the horizon because the sky was clear for the first time in weeks! Heres to spring!

  15. Shari you never cease to amaze me with your talent! What a great idea to get recycled sheets to make squares from! You are definitely right about the price of fabric these days... ouch!!! I'm looking for inexpensive fabric to make some rag rugs with as well... our local salvation army store is total garbage, I don't even like going in there because it is so creepy! *sigh* When it gets warmer I am going on a quest for old sheets... thanks for recharging my creative batteries!

  16. Oh Shari, I just love this quilt! I have SO much fabric stashed away in bins that I never use and I'd love to try this! I am so VERY beginner when it comes to sewing/quilting though. I read that you machined stitched your 6" squares together, 1/4" seams right? Then, the hand stitched quilting is so perfect! I guess what's difficult for me to understand is how you hold the whole completed top together with the batting and the backing while you sit and hand stitch, is it all "tacked" together some way so you can hold it all in place while you stitch? Can you give me some more specific beginners tips please? I would love to try something like this one day!
